Poker Terms/Jargon/Abbreviations Glossary
Thought I would start this up. Feel free to add others that i've forgotten!
At the table: gl = good luck nh = nice hand wp = well played gg = good game nc = nice call nb = nice bet/bluff mbn = must be nice Describing players: fish = very weak player with a poor understanding of the game shark = very good player who should be avoided! donkey = idiot, similar to a fish but tends to be more of a gambler. rock = a very very tight and solid player who tends only to play premium hands. TAG = Tight-aggressive player (a player who is selective over starting hands but when he does play, he plays aggressively) this tends to be a profitable style. LAG = Loose-aggressive player (a player who plays a lot of hands and plays them aggressively) this can be a profitable style although a player like this will undergo big swings rather than grinding out profit. Luck-box = someone who has got very lucky during the game, often hitting miracle cards to win big pots. Card rack = someone who has recently had a very good run of (hole) cards. Calling station = A person who refuses to fold a hand, this can often be a great source of $$$ as you can get payed off for your hand but can also be a big frustration if you just can't force them to fold a weak hand when you're bluffing! Poker hands: nuts = the best possible hand at that point in the hand. boat = a full house aces up = 2 pair: 2 aces + another pair. set = 3 of a kind, tends to refer to when a person holds a pocket pair and gets 3 of a kind. trips = 3 of a kind. quads = 4 of a kind. wheel = the low end straight (A,2,3,4,5) broadway = the high end straight (T, J, Q, K, A) Positions at the table: (Note: This is based on 9 handed hold 'em/omaha games) UTG/'Under the gun' = first to act, to the left of the big blind. UTG+1 = second to act, to the left of UTG EP = early position, often refers to UTG, UTG+1 and UTG+2 MP = middle position, refering to players in between EP (see above) and LP (see below) CO/cut-off = the position to the right of the dealer BTN/button/dealer = The position of the 'dealer button', this is the best position to play from as you will always be last to act. LP = late position, often refers to the BTN/CO/to the right of CO. SB = small blind. BB = big blind. General poker strategy: In Position = this means that you are last to act post flop in the hand, you want to be 'in position' in a hand as therefore you have added information from your opponents actions before acting yourself. You are always in position from the BTN (see above) Out of position = this means that you are not last to act post flop (this is often used when you are first to act in a hand), you do not want to be out of position as you have no information from your opponents actions, you tend to be out of position when playing from the blinds. Limping in = Just calling the blinds preflop Shoving/pushing = Betting 'all in' Leading out = betting into an unraised pot (this is often done 'out of position') Continuation bet = betting the flop after you raised before the flop, this is often done to try and represent a big hand. Set mining = calling pre-flop with a pocket pair in order to hit a 'set' (see above) in order to win a big pot from a big pair such as AA/KK Value betting = making a bet in order to get a call so you can extract as much money from your opponent. Check-raising = checking and then raising once your opponent has bet Check-calling = checking then just calling once your opponent has bet. Check-folding = checking then folding once your opponent has bet. Floating = calling a bet (often a continuation bet) from your opponent in order to try and win the pot later on in the hand. This tactic is mainly employed when in position. Flat-calling/Flatting = Just calling a raise from an opponent. X-betting = e.g. 2-betting or 3-betting. A bet is a '1-bet' so therefore raising this '1-bet' is called a '2-bet' and raising this 2-bet is therefore called a 3-bet and so on. (Note: preflop the big blind is considered 1-bet) EV = Expected Value: Used to describe the long term average outcome of a situation. Calls/certain plays/strategies are often described as +EV (meaning that in the long run you will win $$$ doing this) or -EV (meaning that you will lose $$$.) This term has become common place and has often been jokingly applied to real life situations: e.g. "Playing poker with my mates instead of seeing that girl was definately -EV for my sex life." Valuetown = A fictional location where a player would like to 'take' his opponent to, indicating that he got maximum value from his opponent. Obviously there are loads I can't think of/have missed out so just post them and I will edit this post so they are all in one thing. Hopes this helps some people.
