Talking about poker to non-poker playing friends

Wondering if everyone else gets these sort of questions/comments.

- "If I give you £10 can you turn it into £50 for me?"

- "How much did you win tonight?"
"Erm about $X"
"Ahhh, but how much did you lose?"

- "You should quit while you are up, what if you lose it all?"

- "You shouldn't gamble" - It's not gambling! (really)

And the worst one of all:
AA vs KK for 2x chip avg in sunday million
"Oooo A on the river, nice one, you've got 3 aces"
*Head in hands with gritted teeth* "Erm no actually that's a straight for him, i lost"
"Oh. Oh well, you wanna play Mario Kart?"

Anyone else got any stories/classic comments?

yea i often get into dead ended conversations about "how much i can lose"

people say "but what if you lose it all"

i say "i cant lose it all, because i decide how much i want to gamble with"

then they say "but what if you lose it all in one hand"

i say "i cant lose it all. i only can lose what i chose to enter the game with"

they say "oh..."

and somehow the majority think that by playing poker, you are somehow playing on credit.

i remember my mom tried to tell me some story about this kid who played poker and ended up like 10,000 in debt.....

Haha, good work Bridgey, I'll be honest though, it was this quote in particular that hit the nail straight on the head!

lol...alot of my mates at home think I have a gambling problem. I am addicted to poker. Yes. But when I try and explain that it is not the same as gambling on Roulette or Blackjack because ur not playing against the house, I'm usually confronted with the old...

"Thats what all the gamblers say"...

Maybe you should teach them poker?

Why don't you simply reffer them to a respectable website like pokerjunkie OR pokernews so the can understand you, or even play with you?

Poker is just such a complex game. Rather than walk "newbies" through the nuiances of it all I let them think what they want. You'll find yourself getting frustrated otherwise. It's not a bad thing that most people can't or won't ever get it. If it were so easy then playing for a living would become difficult.

TBF, my mum works as a secretary in a shrinks clinic, this one kid came in and had racked up a debt of £40k. When she was telling me this, the first thing i thought was "by god i wish he sat at my tables". Make me bad?
