So right when I first got my desktop, I think it was around 2004, I read somewhere that it was WORSE to turn your computer on and off everyday, and better to leave it on for extended periods, with only brief shutdowns every week or so...
Well I took that advice for the past 3 or 4 years, but recently began to question that logic, and Ive started shutting it down at night. Aside from its obvious energy savings, I think its probably better for the CPU to let cool off from a day of heavy usage. Im curious if my new idea about the wellbeing of my computer is grounded, or if i should go back to the "leaving it on all the time" routine?

When I had a desktop I would have to turn it off every night unless I wanted to boil alive during the summer in my room. Now I've got a laptop I tend to just close the lid without properly turning it off. My laptop burns up a lot and it's less than 10 months old but runs like it's 5 years old. Possibly because of all the crap I run on this computer. I have about 10-15 poker clients installed on this thing.

If you are not going to be using it for the next few hours, I would just turn it off.
