The Get Strong Thread
Is anybody into working out and taking supplements to achieve desired gains? I'm relatively new to the idea and so far I can attest to proteins working post daily rigorous activity. I also got some nitric oxide for pre-workout which tastes odd and seems only for immediate prior working out sessions. Which I'm not currently doing. So I was interested in seeing who else here is into supplements and maybe find out what works and doesn't.

What is nitric oxide (NO) meant to do? That's the **** that comes out of car exhausts. Be careful dude, I doubt they're regulated properly, like proper drugs, and although you're not inhaling it (like exhaust fumes) it can't be that good for you. I know of papers describing injecting zebrafish embryos with this stuff and I can tell you it screws them up good and proper in early development. It's a signalling molecule in the body (can't remember what it does), but we don't get NO by directly digesting/inhaling it. It comes from the conversion of an amino acid, L-arginine. NO does not get directly abosorbed from your digestive tract. The pills are probably a waste of money.
I also wouldn't worry about using argnine supplements either, as long as you eat meat or dairy products you'll get plenty. But take what I say with a pinch of salt, I'm not a doctor, just a biology student. Edit: forgot to mention, that NO is synthesised by the conversion of part of L-arginine - a common amino acid. Editx2: oh wait, I did mention that. |

that's ****ed up..
I'm going to the store right now, it's used to increase blood flow to the muscles.. when I do take it I can feel my veins in my forearms for instance feel like cable when im carrying 5gallon bucket full of cement for instance.. Then when I tolerate the weird pain it at least doesnt get tired and feels great.. didnt know it was such a harsh chemical.. **** |

If you're just digesting it in pill form, I doubt it does anything at all - your body isn't going to absorb it. It just doesn't get NO this way AFAIK. What you're feeling is probably a placebo effect.
I'd consult a doctor before wasting money on/taking supplements tbh. Like I said, I'm just a student. |

No your probably more than right about digestion through pills, once a clerk at the store told me the pills blew donkey d***. I did use the powder I have a neat shaker with a built in whisk, oh well. I also avoid drinks that clump and don't dissolve right, those are the real waste of $$.
I hate to admit you know what your talking about so I'll look into it about the NO, I really know little about it. Thanks for the HU |

NO is a commonly produced metabolite. It is formed from active tissues in the body to increase blood flow to these active body parts. It dilates the blood vessels increasing the flow of blood. Clinically it is normally used in angina (pain associated with decreased blood flow to the heart muscle) as GTN (glyceryl trinitrate) spray to increase blood flow to the heart and decrease the workload of the heart.
Anyway sorry I saw this and it sort of interested me, the advantage I can see is increased blood flow to muscles during a workout increasing the work that they can do. Don't know of any side effects really. I could check it out though. Your resident nerdy potential drunk dr xx

Medics get taught all the useful stuff... How does the GTN spray work? Do you inhale it, like inhalers for asthma? If so, would pills/powder work via the digestive tract?

Take protein isolate supplements and creatine. They are safe and they work. Creatine increases water retention in your muscles so you actually become more defined while on it as well. I seriously need to hit the gym, I was in a good routine last year and now I don't go at all.
