US Health Care

Just watched the bill get passed. I had a pretty keen interest in this for the last few months. Obviously being from the UK and already having (and reaping benefits from) a similar healthcare system it had my (useless) support, but I'd like to hear more.

I personally think in 15 years time a lot of people will look back and laugh at some of their views on this whole thing. Some dropping as low as to say this bill being passed was tragic for the country and scaremongering with buzz words like "socialist" and "communist".

Compared to the US system, the NHS is the nuts. The Healthcare reform can surely only bring good things. Those opposed to it seem to just throw around terms fed to them by FOX news (interesting video on some people opposed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pilG7...layer_embedded)

Interesting to note that those feature have no idea of the actual contents of the bill, nor can give genuine reasons why its a bad idea.

I'm pleased as punch for America that it got passed.

The bill has been watered down, but something is better than nothing. Time will tell. The system was ****ed before so it can only get better really.

Truly amazing that it could be so close. I think the idea of doing something that involves anything slightly in the direction of a Government takeover scares a lot of Americans - especially as the system has its roots in Europe.

Great YouTube vid! A lot of republicans appear to be brainwashed by FOXNews. The paranoia runs deep.

one word: corruption. **** rolls down hill. Goverment isn't supposed to have anyting to do with the industry. If the government owned the hospitals and had the employess on payroll and all the happy horse**** that comes with owning the hostpitals. Then they're plan might work. The crooked insurance companies aren't gonna live up to the 'theory' that premiums will decrease with larger pools will thrive due to the new enrolls. That companies will battle for lower costs. That's a load of crap. Monopolies aren't supposed to exist yet I can only get one cable or electric company were I live, where's the goverment there. Big companies buy small companies. The insurance companies will win and well be assed out more f'in gov $$$$.. I don't want to go on 5 pages about the real America, I'm just saying I'm not following this plan.

Why shouldn't government have anything to do with the industry? In my eyes, health care and education are on the same playing field. Education is hugely subsidised. It works in a bunch of other countries in the world, why will it not work in America?

But.. but the insurance companies are already crooked right? And the Healthcare reform is there to put barriers in place to make them less crooked and keep them in line. Surely that's a good thing?

And it surely will drive down insurance costs as people become less reliant on the insurers - it'll then be the insurers reliant on the people rather than the other way round, no?

I dont understand why American society struggles to get this,

- Centralised markets suck at consumer goods/services (think Larder, Trebant, BT).

- Free markets suck at "social"/public goods like education, healthcare and defence of the realm both domestic/international.

There is a simple reason for that, the idea that BMW wants to make as much money as they can is reasonable, the idea that the NHS wants to make as much money as possible isn't.

Jdelta you are aware that over 15% of the USA before this bill had no insurance cover and that includes medicare. So basically 15%+ could not recieve medical treatment other than the most urgent of nature, btw that does not include cancer. If you couldn't afford the treatment they told you to **** off as you're obviously just some loser communist who isn't embracing the American dream, true story.
