Protecting Your BB

Ok, so everyone seems to be posting advice articles these days so I thought i'd give my two cents. I'm going to post 1 hand where I protected my BB very aggressively just so i can say why I did it and give you guys a little insight into the art of protecting.

Ok, so this was a turbo tournament and blinds were already big. I'm looking at putting on a lot of aggression so that I can go onto the final table with a big stack.

This guy was a big stack for the same reasons, he was playing aggressive and I was playing tight. At this point in the game my stack is more than enough to get him off AQ especially with my image. In my opinion this guy is only calling with AA/KK/QQ/AK and mayb JJ so I figure this is a perfect chance to steal the 11k that's in the pot!

Protecting your BB is a bad idea against short stacks because they usually will be committed and will call you with a much wider range of hands. This guy can easily lay down his JJ knowing that he still has 25k left and more than enough to stay alive.

You should only ever pull off these stunts when you have been at the table long enough to understand certain players at the table and only if you are getting the right fold equity to get villain off 90% of his hand range. Also the pot has to be big enough to be worth while stealing

The great side affect of doing this also means that they will tend not to steal your BB again. This guy insta-folded so I guess he had JUNK heehee. Go me! ended up bubbling the final table with A9 against A6 and that was protecting my BB lol.

I think I would definitely show if I was fed up with his stealing your BB, but probs not if you want to keep that tight image! I would show most of the time though, to get action next time when i shove with AA/KK

I have auto muck win/lost hand ALL the time. I don't think it is ever +EV to show your hand deep in a tournament or at any stage really. The only time i ever show is in the rebuy period to show that I shove with trash so I get the most value out of the premium hands.

i think bbs should be protected, if you knowtice your bb getting stealed light repush with hands that will generally beat their range like top 30%

This is how my protecting of the BB went for me.

Blinds 800/1600

SB limps.
BB raises 4k.
SB reraises 14k.
BB shoves.
SB calls 14k behind.

SB shows K3o
BB shows 88.

Flop - Kxx

yea i have a lot of trouble with this, especially late in a tourney

ill get some midroad hand like Ac7c and someone in mid or late pos raises it up to 3x the bb....

i have serious trouble folding that hand EVEN THOUGH i know im out of position, and probably behind statistically....

Buyin was $66 and first place got prize money + a wsop seat. I think I busted somewhere around 30th because of that 88 v K3o. He was tryin to get tricky on me by limp raising and it was too obvious. Had been playing with the guy for 3 or 4 hours.
