C Betting Guide (Flop Texture)

There are 6 types of flop texture for continuation betting. I will talk about each one of them and rank them in order from great to cbet to not so great.

1) your classic Kxx (K can represent any broadway card).

This board is great to cbet because its easy for your preflop raising range to hit but not so easy for your opponents calling range to hit. This flop can be cbetted ALOT unless you are against a thinking opponent who will recognize this is a good flop to cbet and mayb fire back at you.

2) When there is a pair on the board e.g K8K

This is a great flop to cbet because its hard for your opponent to connect with that board unless they have pocket pair A8 or a random king. What makes this board worse than the previous is that it is harder for you to connect with this so your bet represents less of a credible threat. So a thinking opponent is more likely to reraise you or float you on this kind of board which makes it worse than the previous board. However hopefully by cbetting this board enough you will get paid off more when you actually connect

3) K62 board all spades (Monotone board)

If your opponent doesn't have a spade in his hand this will be a very hard to call a cbet from yourself. Also with a hand like 67 A2 its hard for your opponent to call a cbet because he may be drawing almost dead. Also your cbet is almost never going to get raised here. Opponents often are not happy raising this board unless they have spades or a set because they dont really want to get three bet by you. So you have chances to outdraw him on the turn if he just calls here.

4) KJx - two Broadway cards on the board.

This is a less great flop for a cbet. Though even though you've raised preflop and this board connects quite well with your preflop raise range it also hits your opponents hands quite well JQ KQ KJ K10. So this kinda board can be cbetted but not with two great a frequency probably 50% or lower. This board will fold out alot of your opponents speculative hands like 87 67 suited ect and alot of his pocket pairs 10's and below. You are also not going to get re raised too much on this board because its credible you have AK AJ and its not a obvious cbetting board.

5) 653 - three small cards.

With 3 small cards it generally means a coordinated board. This kinda board in general will hit the preflop caller better than the preflop raiser. Not to say you cant cbet this board but you will get alot less credibility than some of the other boards and you will rarely get called by worse. Your opponent is more likely to float you on this board with a hand like 107 - two overs. And a lot of his speculative hands and also a lot of his pocket pairs.

6) 9s10sJd - co ordinated higher connected hand.

This kind of board is about the worst type of c betting board you can get. It hits alot of your opponents range with and pair flush or straight draw. Even if your opponent checks to you it is a great spot for your opponent to check raise you with a straight or flush draw. And if you are holding AK AQ you have some chance of getting paired up or get a straight so this is the kind of board you want to check/check behind here just to see where it goes.

Great post James.

I would just like to add to 5).

Boards like that at lower stakes are pretty sick if you have AQ/AK and are c-betting. If your opponent has called you with any pocket pair that is higher than the board it will be extremely tough to get them off of it unless you are able to represent JJ-AA by committing a lot. Pretty nasty flop to c-bet.

Good post . I used to just cbet blindly on whatever flop. Only recently its become obvious that you cant just cbet every flop. Thanks for the advice.
