    a lesson from maxima.org

so as ive told both james and nick, i am also a member of a car forum called MAXIMA.org

maxima.org is huge - at least 80,000 active members a day, with over 10,000,000 unique users and many more millions of posts.

anyway, the reason i bring it up is because of their anti-spam technique, which, when thinking about the new spam we see every day, would seem to be a good idea..

they have a rule that you need 15 posts in other, existing threads, before you can start a thread of your own. granted spammers can still post stupid **** in existing posts, but they cant start new threads.

just something to think about. frankly im getting sick of deleting warhammer/viagra/anime advertisements and banning their authors.

I would start by requiring maybe 5 'other' posts before starting your own thread here because it is not so busy a forum.

they will probably just post it in other threads already open , but i guess 15 posts is a start. any other way to reduce the spam?

better of setting the forum to not allow live links until you reach 10 or 15 posts.

    Get decent CAPTCHA? ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha )
Is a good idea for user sign up. Then hopefully only real users will sign up. Should be an easy option to add as many other people are doing it.

New breed of spammers. All these people with their biography as "MAN" get around the captcha. Vbulletin hasn't actually got anything that can stop these spammers as of yet and even words/logical questions on signup won't stop them. We could have a 5 or 10 post rule about starting new threads. Will look into it tomorrow (it's late).

Nick, can you implement a rule whereby you have to moderate/approve the first post of any new user, that would seem the most effective way?

I guess but it would just deter new members. If I wanted to sign up to a site and post on it because I saw this guy called Litellio making an outrageous bluff; I wouldn't want my first post moderated!
