    How to improve!

Hi I have played poker seriously for 2 years, I am 22. Within this time I was studying at univeristy and played poker which paid for rent, tuition and general living costs and I have tracked around 200,000 hands during this period.

I would like to offer coaching to players who are struggling to beat limits up to 50nl. I coach in 1 hour blocks for a competitive $20 but would also be online most the time to answer your questions. Please pm for additional details and questions.

    Thanks,

    Dan

    I'm going to allow this.

Welcome to the forum, you'd probably want to provide evidence of your ability in this thread.

    Thanks for allowing my post.

I remember the time when I won my first $100 pot. My family, my friends all thought I was crazy that I considered making consistent money out of poker one day. The thought of playing a couple hours in my room each day and then going down the pub with friends and getting out of university debt free was just a dream but a dream that I made happen. I was highly motivated and after a rough start I eventually put in 184,000 hands ($100NL) at pacific poker and made my move into a 5 figure profit under the alias: NoRhino. (seen below) I realise this is done in excel the site emailed my hands each month, if neccessary I can provide all the data used to plot this graph.

Poker isn't easy, but once you are able to think on a level above everyone else it becomes a whole lot easier. It doesn't take me long to spot leaks in players playing small stakes poker which is normally first seen pre flop. If you play small stakes you may think you understand pre flop and perhaps you do but even when I was wining at $100nl I was still able to learn alot. Their is so much to think about i.e. understanding how we can be aggressive with a non polarized range in position while ensuring we dont miss value post flop. Sometimes we re-raise with a worse hand than we would call with. We can disucss the reasons for this and I can explain how this will affect post flop decisions. As balugawhale says, pre flop leaks are amplified post flop.

Nowadays it is the turn play that many players are focussing on but their is still much to grasp playing the flop before focussing on later streets.
Are you someone who see's a continuation and suddenly are lost with what to do because we missed, have we considered turn cards that will pressure our opponent to fold his air or weak pair? Did we consider re-raising pre flop? Are we playing back too much and forgetting how to play ABC poker when its neccessary?

Where is our edge and what our opponents bad at? I hope to teach you to beat the limit you are struggling with as well as be able to discuss poker outside lessons for your benefit.

I also played a tiny bit on other pokersites, unfortunately I didn't have pokertracker all the time.

Sweet profit. Your second graph looks a lot like my PT graph just over a lot less hands. How's your tournament game?

Thanks, never really enjoyed tournaments and only played a few MTT's. Was lucky enough to get 2nd in $25K GTD on PKR once.

At pacific each time I moved up I ran bad at $200nl.. bad timing, resulted in a 75,000 breakeven stretch, good times!

What's your advice on tilting then Dan? Bizkit recommended a book I'm going to pick up. It's my one major leak in my game.

I think for me it was understanding that even after 50,000 hands or so you can be in the red even with a reasonable winrate.

I think when I finally felt confident in my game and could clearly see my edge I was able to control tilt to a pretty good level. Infact I have reached a point where I am barely affected after 20 buy in downswings. I think I was tilted the most when I thought I was good but didn't have anything to show for it.

My advice is just making sure your environment is good, not have people distract you and get you angry... ensure that time at the tables is respected by others. Make sure you play at least a reasonable amount of hands if possible, this way variance will not dwell on you so much.

Finally dont play if you know you cant play anytime soon because for me It would mean I wanted to get even there and then if I was down on the session. Try and analyse winnings in monthly blocks and not daily, stop checking the cashier!

Oh ye I bought that book by tommy angelo, read parts of it, wouldn't really recommend it but seemed ok. I think just having a good life outside poker is really super important.
