Or play it differently? Any thoughts appreciated? On reflection I feel that the reraise on the flop was pretty strong, especially after his flat to my 3bet pre. I put him on KQhh to be honest.

no there is no way you could get away from this.
I prefer flatting raise IP.
As played is fine.

I hate getting check minraised. Would call flop and get it in on most turns.

I know I'm not the most liked member on this forum, but I think you coul have got away from this.
Firstly, when playing with AQ and getting called preflop like that you should always bear in mind AK.
Second (and most importantly), his check-raise on the flop was a massive warning shot. He's only ever going to check raise you like that with a monster. He made a $3 re-raise in a pot already worth $15. This looks standard value betting to me against a fish.
I really think your all in bet was too far. There are no monster hands he could have already completed on the flop such as straights/flushes to be re-raising you like that. It's an obvious set.
In conclusion however, I've had alot of experience in 0.10/0.25 level and find that there are alot of bad players there; so my analysis won't always be correct. Sometimes you might get a player doing that with AJ.

4 handed or not should still at least be wary of it before going all in (although i am TAG so it's just my opinion on the topic).
If you think it's too coincidental shorthanded tanman, i recommend taking a look at this hand i played today here lol (two full houses!):-

You should not be afraid to go allin purely based on the fact that he MIGHT have AK. This is a scared way of playing poker and can lose alot of value in the LR. The player in question could of made this same move with Ax, any FD or merely as a bluff, all of which we are ahead of (excluding AK), therefore the ship extracts value from alot of hands here. Flatting his 3-bet on the flop will often end up leading to a tricky decision on the turn and given the stack sizes any other bet after the flop would of resulted in an all-in anyways.
I am a TAG player too, but theres a huge difference between being tight and passive.
Btw, I saw your hand and it was sick, but that is only one example!

I don't agree with anything you said there. His $3 re-raise value bet was a dead give away for trips. He's not going to re-raise like that with Ax and it's unliky he'd call the prefop raise even if it is short-handed with a low Ace kicker.
If he had AJ, he would have flat called the flop bet and not made a fish trapping re-raise. If he thought hero was bluffing, he would go all in or at least a much higher bet - in which case i would personally have called. But I repeat, to be re-raied $3 in a $15 pot on the flop is so obviously trips. I've seen tons of players in NL40 and NL20 fold to this play because it's so obvious.
At best, the guy was bluffing he had trips; but his bluff wudnt be enough to prevent a value call anyway. So he's can't be bluffing, and he obviously had you beat.
Consier A9 in this situation. You would'nt re-raise $3 on a flop unless you were certain you had your opponent beat. Which with A9 is not.
